Favorite Films of 2011

The following are my fifteen favorite films of 2011.  Both tiers are arranged alphabetically.  I was going to list fifteen additional films in a third tier of runners up, but I think the omissions say as much about me as what I have included.  Feel free to comment with your own opinions on this topic.

First Tier

  • Certified Copy (dir. Abbas Kiarostami)
  • Drive (dir. Nicolas Winding Refn)
  • Into the Abyss (dir. Werner Herzog)
  • The Skin I Live In (dir. Pedro Almodóvar)
  • Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (dir. Tomas Alfredson)

Second Tier

  • Cave of Forgotten Dreams (dir. Werner Herzog)
  • Coriolanus (dir. Ralph Fiennes)
  • A Dangerous Method (dir. David Cronenberg)
  • Hugo (dir. Martin Scorsese)
  • The Mill and the Cross (dir. Lech Majewski)
  • Moneyball (dir. Bennett Miller)
  • Poetry (dir. Lee Chang-dong)
  • Rango (dir. Gore Verbinski)
  • A Separation (dir. Asghar Farhadi)
  • The Trip (dir. Michael Winterbottom)

  1. I am happy to see ‘Poetry’ in a list! I need to see Certified Copy & Drive. A Seperation was my favorite film so I would switch it out with The Skin I Live In (a good film, though I couldn’t help but compare it to The Secret in Their Eyes-not plot but themes; but A Seperation just struck a chord me.) Great list.
